The first six months of the year have seen a year-on-year increase in the consumer price index (CPI) by 1.5 times, the General Statistics Office (GSO) has said.
CPI in June increased by 0.85% compared to May. The price of food increased the most in June, 1.44%. It was followed by housing and construction materials; cultural, sports and recreation commodities; garment and footwear goods; and other equipment and services.
Compared to December, 2006, CPI in June increased by 5.2%.
According to the GSO, the increase is brought about by many reasons. Complex climate changes, avian flu, foot-and-mouth disease which have not been controlled have influenced the price.
Meanwhile, the output of rice production has decreased sharply in the north and increased negligibly in the south.
Apart from these, two increases in the price of oil in June, an increase in the price of coal, poultry food, fertilizer, material and fuel imports are said to greatly influence production spending and people’s lives.
Meanwhile, the GSO also says the management of domestic prices and the market has not been strong enough. On the other hand, smuggling and the monopoly of some enterprises has also pushed the price up.
CPI is expected to be on the rise in the last six months of the year. If there is no effective solution to control the price, it will be more difficult to keep the CPI increase lower than GDP growth, the GSO has warned.
